Missing Vermont woman found after 18-mile walk

BROOKFIELD, Vt. (AP) — Vermont State Police say a 73-year-old woman who was reported missing is safe and in good health after walking 18 miles away from her home.

A Brookfield family called police Thursday morning to report that Mary Roulston was gone when they woke up. The family said Roulston, who was last seen around midnight, was an avid walker who typically covers about 5 miles a day.

Officers began searching the area and checking with stores along Route 12. A Cumberland Farms clerk about 8 miles north of the home said she had seen Roulston around 4:30 a.m., and a plow truck driver said he later had seen her walking toward Montpelier.

Roulston was found around 11:30 a.m. in Montpelier, across from the Statehouse, and returned home.
