BOSTON (AP) — Organizers of Boston’s bid to host the 2024 Olympics are proposing the Deerfield River in western Massachusetts as the canoe slalom venue if Boston is selected.
It is the first proposed venue in that region of the state. Western Massachusetts economic development officials have said they thought they had a good chance to host paddling events, and possibly preliminary basketball and volleyball games.
The river flows through Franklin and Berkshire counties. Boston 2024 organizers said its steep course and controlled water flows from five hydroelectric dams create ideal conditions for whitewater sports.
Under the plans announced Monday night, the river would become the home of a sustainable national canoe, kayak and slalom training center. No specific location was announced.
Boston 2024 has recently announced other event sites, and says more announcements are coming.
