Man who started deadly fire sentenced

HUDSON FALLS, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The man who killed his girlfriend by starting a fire with her mother’s newspaper obituary learned his fate on Friday.

Derrick Guilder will be spending the next 22 years to life in prison.

In September, Guilder started a fire at his home in Hudson Falls. Ashley Coltrain, 18, was living with him and lost her life in the fire.

Guilder used Coltrain’s mother’s newspaper obituary to ignite the flames.

“We all loved Ashley,” her aunt Ondrea Crandall said. “Ashley was perfect in our eyes. I can’t imagine why anyone would want to hurt her. She was a huge blessing to all of us.”

While recovering at the hospital from smoke inhalation, Guilder confessed to police.

It was all planned as a murder suicide, but he panicked and police found him standing on the porch roof while Coltrain lay dead inside.
