ROTTERDAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Schenectady County police dispatch confirmed a fire near Taylor & Vadney Sporting Goods on Broadway.
South Schenectady Fire Chief Justin Laustrop confirmed many of the details related to the timeline of the fire.
A call came in around 10:40 p.m. that a working structure fire had taken place on Broadway in Rotterdam. When crews arrived they found smoking coming from the windows and later flames shooting out from the roof of the building.
The building contained three apartments in addition to the Taylor and Vadney Sporting Goods store.
Chief Laustrop believed that fire started in the second or third floor and three people evacuated the building safely. Additionally, two cats were rescued.
It took approximately 45 minutes to get the fire under control, although some electrical issues led to some difficulties in quickly putting the fire out.
The bulk of the damage took place on the second and third floors, as the roof collapsed leading to a lot of smoke and water damage to the gun shop.
The shop owner said their weren’t any weapons in the store, so there weren’t any initial concerns about the fire taking place in a building containing a gun shop. The gun shop has occupied that space in the building for a significant period of time.
Five total agencies worked together and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The Red Cross assisted five total individuals that were displaced by the fire.
