CHICOPEE, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A Massachusetts woman became a millionaire overnight as the winner of a massive Powerball jackpot.
Most buying a $2 ticket never think they’ll actually win, but there’s always a sliver of hope. That hope turned into a dream come true for one woman in Chicopee.
There was a $758 million smile as 53-year-old hospital worker Mavis Wanczyk took home the largest jackpot ever won by a single ticket in North American Lottery history.
“He goes, ‘Let me see that ticket.’ He goes, ‘You won.'”
She chose those six lucky numbers at the Pride Market in Chicopee where a frenzy of media descended as the locals took in the spectacle.
“It’s crazy. There’s a lot of people here. I can’t believe it.”
Others hoping to jump on the lucky bandwagon.
“So I’m gonna try my luck now.”
Many locals in disbelief over the narrowly missed opportunity.
“I had 15 calls this morning. My answer was no, it’s not me. It’s not me,” one man said.
No, he’s not the winner, but like most people here, he’s glad it’s a local who struck gold.
“I hope the person really needs the money. I hope it works out for them.”
It’s also working out for the owner. The Pride Market chain has stores across Massachusetts and Connecticut.
“Well, I hope she spends it wisely and that she gives back to the community,” Bob Bolduc, Founder of Pride Station & Stores, said.
It’s a community that’s enjoying its time in the spotlight.
The pumps have been going all day. It’s very busy as people are hoping some luck rubs off on them.
The gas station will get $50,000 from the jackpot and will donate it to local charities.
