SOUTH SCHODACK, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A fireworks tent collapsed in South Schodack Friday afternoon.
The nasty weather came slowly at first, but then it all came at once.
“I looked out, and it started getting real dark,” Jeremy Mayes said. “Next thing you know, here comes the rain.”
Mayes’s son was working at the TNT Fireworks display at the time. When the strong winds came through, the tent came down. Four people became trapped in the tent.
“Next thing he knows – boom! Something picks the whole tent up,” he said. “All three of them sends them that way. Fireworks just everywhere.”
When Mayes heard the news, he came to the truck stop as fast as he could. His son and three others were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries.
Mayes said they are fortunate.
“It could have been a lot worse,” he said. “I could have been here. I’m 54, and my body is not as tough as my boys. What would have happened to me if I got slammed up?”
Meanwhile, across the street, Joe McGrath had his own close call. The winds knocked down a large tree mere inches from his home.
“Yeah, it’s pretty scary,” he said. “It is a high wind area, and today proved it.”
As the cleanup begins, the damage serves as a reminder.
“Weather is brutal sometimes,” McGrath said.
There was $30,000 worth of fireworks in the tent. Almost all of it is now destroyed.
