Driving You Crazy: Turn down the bass

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – What do you do when you’re at a stoplight and the car next to you plays music so loud you can’t even hear your own radio, let alone think!

It’s all about drivers who crank up the bass.

You definitely hear the loud music on a day like today but when it turns the car into a rattling cage, other drivers say enough is enough.

There’s something about a good subwoofer.

“It’s the best part of every system really,” Nicholas said.

At Boomer Mcloud, drivers come in searching for a sound system that shakes their core.

“They want to be the noise coming down the block. Some people ask for it actually.”

More doesn’t always mean better when it’s not done right.

Without sound deadening, loud bass turns your car into a rattling cage.

“Obnoxious noise, not clean, doesn’t sound good, just noise and rattle. We’re all about producing a good sound that somebody will enjoy and it won’t offend other people that hear it,” George Khachadourian said.

People living near Washington Park in Albany say it gets worse when the weather gets warm.

“Every day and all day long. You can’t hear the TV in your own apartment,” Vincent Favors said.

“When I’m studying I want to focus and then all of a sudden you hear this loud music and it’s like alright, now I have to look up and see what’s happening. Then it interrupts my train of thought,” Travis Pyka said.

It’s possible to drive with music that is too loud and you can actually get a ticket.

“Some people in the department have certain things that can measure sound. If it’s too loud you can be issued a summons for it,” Schenectady Police Sgt. Matt Dearing said.

Whether it’s a bumpin’ bass or rattling trunk, some people don’t mind a little interruption, every now and then.

“I think it’s kind of enlivening. It adds some energy to the situation and I kind of appreciate it,” Brandon Costelloe-Kuehn said.

“Yeah he probably is the one with the loud music,” Amy Gray said.

It is very rare, but you can be issued a summons if your music is too loud. The penalty, that’s up to the judge.
