HATTERAS ISLAND, N.C. (WNCT) – An 80-year-old Hatteras Island man was found alive Sunday after not returning home Saturday.
Just before 8:30 a.m. Sunday, a Hatteras Island Rescue skiff crew found the man about eight miles northeast of Hatteras Island, adrift in his 18-foot skiff. He was unconscious but breathing, and brought to Avon Harbor by rescue crews.
Dare County EMS transported the man to Avon Medical Center. A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew then flew him to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia.
The search for the man began after family members of the man notified authorities Saturday evening that the man had not returned home after boating in the Pamlico Sound.
The man’s current condition has not yet been released.
