TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Millions of people with Yahoo email accounts are busy changing their passwords and watching their accounts Thursday after the company announced more than a billion accounts may have been hacked.

We wondered how something like this can happen and what you should be doing to protect yourself. NEWS10 ABC’S John Gray dropped by GreyCastle Security in Troy. They help companies keep their computers safe and say more often than not, a big hack like this can be traced back to one person doing something stupid.

“Many times with these breaches, it tends to be human error, someone made a bad decision whether it was allowing someone access to a system they thought they trusted, but really just tricking them,” said an employee from Grey Castle Security. “We’re also seeing reports on a lot of the early information that passwords or secret questions weren’t encrypted with old technology so definitely looking like there are some areas where Yahoo will have some blame with this, with this breach.”

As far as protecting yourself and your computer, GreyCastle says change your passwords frequently, and don’t click on links or visit sites you don’t know. You’re just asking for trouble.
