LATHAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) — The Albany County District Attorney’s office is putting a twist on the twelve days of Christmas. It’s called the 12 Days of Gun Buybacks and the goal is to get illegal firearms out of Albany.
District Attorney David Soares says the idea of gun buybacks here stems from community guns that were hidden in neighborhoods used by many people. Authorities wanted a peaceful way to remove the guns, but the buybacks became more successful with the involvement of trusted people in the community, like Pastor Charlie Muller.
He’ll help you exchange a handgun or long gun for a $100 gift card to Crossgates mall, just in time for holiday shopping.
“You do not have to give up your name, you do not have to give up any information, all we’re interested in is removing that illegal gun from the commerce of violence and in exchange you’re going to get a gift card, that’s going to help you provide for your family,” Soares said.
The program continues for the next 12 days and you can arrange a confidential exchange of a weapon by calling Pastor Charlie Muller at 518-857-0726.
