MAYFIELD, N.Y. (NEWS10) — It was an awful situation Wednesday morning for firefighters, a passerby who tried to help, and of course, friends and family of the man who died in a fatal mobile home fire.
Crystal Aldous took video of a burning home early Wednesday morning, after she says she tried to save the man who was still inside. She says she saw smoke coming from the trailer at 3786 State Highway 30 in Mayfield on her way to work and immediately called 9-1-1 and then:
“I went up to the house and I’m yelling, ‘Is anybody in there? Can you hear me? Help is on the way,’ and I could hear somebody saying, ‘help me’,” Aldous explained.
The man who lives in the trailer was found dead by firefighters shortly after just a few feet from the door.
“I could feel the heat and I could smell everything that was going on,” Aldous said.
Aldous says she tried desperately to open the door.
“I’m throwing snow on the fire thinking, trying to at least keep the door cool enough to try to at least get it open but it wasn’t successful,” Aldous said.
The fire was quickly spreading and melting shingles on a neighboring home.
“The other side had just gone right up because we were trying to find other exits or entries that we could get into,” Aldous said.
“To know that I was right there telling him hold on hon’, helps on the way, [it’s] just sad,” Aldous said. “It’s really sad. I feel sad for his family. I feel sad for him. I wish there was something else I could have done but I know that I tried.”
The Fulton County Fire Coordinator says the cause is still under investigation and on Wednesday, officials were going through what is left of the trailer to try and figure out how it started. They plan to perform an autopsy on Thursday.
