ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Officials in Albany County are taking steps to make sure the community is prepared for the worst situation, an active shooter.
An active shooter can happen anytime, anywhere and leaders want the public to know what to do under the worst circumstances.
Police are trained on how to react but the average person may not know what to do when they’re at a mall, college campus or other public places when gunshots ring out.
In fact, some reactions researchers found might surprise you.
“For the most part, people just freeze when they hear gunshots. What we found in studies is that people tend to run toward the gunshot in the pandemonium that ensues,” Warren Clark, the President and CEO of the Better Business Bureau in Upstate New York, said.
So what should you do? Three words that you may have heard in the wake of the attack at Ohio State University — run, hide, fight.
Run if you can, hide if you can’t run, and as a last resort, fight.
