(NEWS10) – The brother of a Netherlands man is speaking out after his brother chose to be euthanized for his alcohol addiction earlier this year.
According to Linda Magazine, Mark Langedijk, 41, chose to end his life after eight years of alcoholism, 21 hospital, and rehab admissions. His brother Marcel is writing a book about the death of his brother that is set to be published in 2017.
Marcel, according to Linda, writes about his anger and attempts to understand his brother’s decision.
“By the time Mark realized that he needed help, the alcohol had already fixed it. Which has never left him.”
The Netherlands allows individuals to request euthanasia who “are experiencing unbearable suffering with no prospect of improvement.” Under Dutch law, any action intended to terminate someone’s life is a criminal offense. The only exemption from criminal liability is where a patient is experiencing “unbearable suffering.”
