Seizure causes woman to crash her car

WATERVLIET, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Crews in Watervliet spent Saturday night cleaning up after a car accident caused significant damage on 19th Street.

Fortunately, no one was seriously injured, but witnesses say the crash shook their homes.

A woman was in a nail salon when she saw an SUV smash into her car and a three other parked cars. She says the car was traveling so fast it only looked like a blur, taking out a light post and signs.

Neighbors living at the corner ran over to help the driver. Police say she suffered a medical condition at the time of the crash.

Dave Dudley felt a silver SUV come barreling down the street. He walked outside and found his cement stairs smashed and shattered glass all down the sidewalk.

“She was traveling fast,” Dudley recalled.

Police say the driver suffered a seizure at the time of the crash. They believe she passed out before hitting a light post, taking out a few signs, then slamming into a parked car at 3rd Avenue, causing a domino effect that damaged at least four cars.

“I ran over to help to make sure she was okay,” Dudley said. “She was not conscious. She was passed out in the driver’s seat. The car was still starting over so I cut the negative cable off so the car would stop turning over that way it didn’t catch on fire or anything like that.”

Police say the driver is expected to be okay and only one other person suffered minor injuries. While crews cleaned up debris scattered all over the road, witnesses are thankful no one was seriously hurt. Dudley says he had been taking out the trash just a few minutes before the crash.

“Yeah a few minutes earlier I could have gotten hit,” Dudley said. “That’s the thing about living off the main drag right here. You never know what is going to happen. There are so many accidents out here.”

NEWS10 ABC’s Rachel Yonkunas spoke with the owner of one of the parked cars that had been hit and she says she won’t be pressing charges.
