SCHOHARIE, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Senator Chuck Schumer is calling for a first of its kind national firefighter cancer registry.
Sen. Schumer joined firefighters at Niagara Engine 6 in Schoharie on Wednesday.
Cancer risk can double for firefighters due to exposure to toxic chemicals.
“It would let us see what chemicals are causing this kind of stuff,” Sen. Schumer said. “You need a big registry.”
The legislation would establish a specialized national cancer registry, which would be managed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
