NEW YORK (CNN) – President of the Alt-Right National Policy Institute Richard Spencer celebrated Donald Trump’s victory with his supporters by giving Nazi salutes over the weekend.
Much of Spencer’s speech, was full of racist and anti-Semitic rhetoric.
The Trump campaign released this statement on the Alt-Right Conference:
“President-elect Trump has continued to denounce racism of any kind and he was elected because he will be a leader for every American. To think otherwise is a complete misrepresentation of the movement that united Americans from all backgrounds.”
Trump’s appointment of Steve Bannon as a chief strategist was criticized as a way of cozying up to the Alt-Right movement.
Bannon proudly called the Breitbart website he ran “the platform for the Alt-Right”, but Bannon now claims to reject the racist and anti-Semitic elements of the movement.
He’s describing himself as an “economic nationalist.”
