BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Keith Cauley and Pastor Eric Johns have known each other for 18 years. They met through the Buffalo Dream Center when Cauley himself was homeless, just out of jail and a recovering drug addict.
Cauley said, “For thirty years, all I knew about was dope in the streets.”
The first time Pastor Johns decided to spend a week outdoors, raising awareness and money for Buffalo’s homeless population, Cauley was there.
Pastor Eric Johns said, “He’s taken it upon himself to be my body-guard. He’s done this for 18 years.”
Now Cauley is back on his feet and together, he and Pastor Johns spread the Buffalo Dream Center’s mission.
Johns said, “Homeless people are people we see everyday and we don’t really think about it, or ignore it.”
He’s seen the homeless community evolve over the 18 years.
He said,”What started as the single man has evolved to women, children and families eating in soup kitchens and staying in shelters.”
He doesn’t see an end to homelessness in Western New York, but every person who helps makes a difference.
The team raises money for “Boxes of Love,” a Christmas campaign that feeds three thousand hungry families through the holidays.
