SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (NEWS10) – More than one week after the election, people around the country are still protesting, including in Saratoga Springs.
A message of love rang through downtown Saratoga Springs Friday night as people gathered for an anti-Trump protest. They united under one phrase: “Love Trumps Hate.”
People like Al Ormsby came together to denounce president-elect Donald Trump.
“So many people are upset about the kind of hate he has stirred up and his appeal to hate,” he said.
Ormsby believes Trump will undo the country’s progress. For that reason, he said it’s important to stand up.
“We’re not going to allow us to go backwards,” he stated. “We’re not going to allow us to have a return of racism and the worst stuff that we’ve had in our history.”
Rebecca Zeh felt the same.
“I feel like we’ve lost sight about what America’s all about,” she said.
A few people were there who support Trump, but that didn’t stop those protesting him. They said they’re going to do everything they can to protect basic American rights.
“We were built by people who came to this country looking for a better life, and I think it’s important to remember that,” Zeh said.
Even if they can’t change the results of the election, the protesters felt uniting as a community will make a difference.
“At least we, you know, stood up for what we believe in, which is really important,” Zeh said.
“We’re not going to be silent, and if we don’t send that message, our children in future years and the grandchildren will hold us accountable for that,” Ormsby said.
Another protest is scheduled for Saturday afternoon at the Capitol.
