SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A child was taken to the hospital after he was hit by a car Friday evening.
The incident took place around 6:20 p.m. Friday on the 2300-block of Van Vranken Avenue in Schenectady.
A family friend said 8-year-old Malachi was with his mom and brother, when they got out of their car and looked both ways before crossing the street but in a split second, a car was in the road, and Malachi had been hit.
He was taken to Albany Medical Center in serious but stable condition. He is currently in Pediatric ICU with serious injuries, including multiple fractures to his skull, pelvis, and ribs.
He’s going to survive, but may be undergoing surgery soon.
There is no word on any charges for the driver, and police said the driver has been cooperative. Drugs, speed and alcohol are not contributing factors.
Witnesses said seconds after it happened, they saw the boy laying on the ground surrounded by a pool of blood. Neighbors said it’s typically a busy street for children.
“It’s just a sad situation,” Salena Pacheco said. “I feel like it could’ve been one of your kids. A kid could’ve got out of the car, and a parent could’ve told them it was okay to cross, and a car came out of nowhere and your child got hit. You wouldn’t expect this to happen.”
The incident remains under investigation.
