Police make arrest in connection to Crossgates Mall shooting

GUILDERLAND, N.Y. (NEWS10) – The suspect responsible for the Saturday shooting at Crossgates Mall was arrested by police.

Tasheem Maeweather, of Albany, was charged with Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree.

He was arraigned in the Town of Guilderland Court Monday night. He pleaded not guilty.

Maeweather was caught through surveillance footage and by an eyewitness. He was located Monday afternoon after leaving an Albany car wash in a blue 2007 BMW.

Police said he was taken into custody without incident. The vehicle was seized for evidence.

“He was developed as a suspect right away through video surveillance, and he was picked out by an eyewitness,” Guilderland Police Chief Carol Lawlor said.

The shooting on Saturday started as a dispute between two people, according to police. The exact number of shots that were fired remains unclear, but police said evidence shows at least one shot was fired.

“My belief is that he left the mall prior to [it] being locked down, so think about the size of the mall,” Albany Police Chief Brendan Cox said. “If something happens in this building, people are going to have a chance to flee.”

The weapon has not been recovered.

Cox said the incident was a perfect example of why active shooter drills are important.

“We have to make sure that all of our people are ready to respond and know what they’re expected to do, especially when you talk about a cross-agency incident,” he said.

Maeweather has a criminal history and is currently on probation until 2020 for felony drug sales. During his arraignment, Maeweather told the judge he is not in school, does not have a job, and has a learning disability.

The 20 year old was sent to the Albany County Jail without bail. Another preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday morning at Guilderland Town Court.
