ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – One day after Crossgates Mall was completely evacuated, workers return to work this Morning, most of them feeling uneasy.

Police cars parked out of Crossgates Mall overnight and into the morning and workers have begun returning to the mall for the first time since yesterday’s chaotic incident.

The question many people still ask is what now?

“It’s still scary. It’s scary,” said mall employee Shana Dilaura.

Shauna is a manager inside the mall and when shots were fired Saturday afternoon, panic set in.

“You don’t have any idea what’s going on,” said Dilaura. “I’m worried about my staff. I’m worried about the other customers that are now coming into my store.

Shauna and her team made it out safely along with Elizabeth Kulkus, another mall employee.

“It was terrifying. I could hear it that my team was scared, they didn’t really know what to do,” said Kulkus.

She says thanks to recent training, cooler heads prevailed, and that may have made the biggest different.

“We’ve been practicing drills for about six months,” said Kulkus. “We’ve had active shooter drills so knew how to handle it. If we didn’t have that I don’t think it would have gone as well.”

This morning, workers return to the mall, walking into the now quiet scene of a place that was anything but less than 24 hours earlier.

“You’re cautious. Our store wasn’t secured yesterday when we left. It’s very strange walking back into the same scene as we left it yesterday,” said Dilaura.

The biggest surprise might be how unsurprised some people here are that something like this could happen here.

“I see things that I shouldn’t be seeing or hear things I shouldn’t be hearing. Just disputes in the mall all the time, fights. It was just a matter of time,” said another mall employee.

“We have fights in Crossgates, we have people that are honestly a little sketchy coming through the mall,” said Dilaura.

Now that the scene has calmed down, these workers agree that it’s time to push forward.

“Keep your heads up. We got to move on,” said Kulkus.

“We know to be cautious and we know what the plan is in the future,” said Dilaura.
