ROUND LAKE, N.Y. (NEWS10) – With Friday’s high winds, not a good day to be out on the water and a couple of kayakers learned that the hard way.
Two kayakers enjoying a day on Round Lake were taken by surprise by a big gust of wind, knocking them into the frigid waters.
Rescue crews were called to the scene and were able to get the two men to safety.
One of them was taken to the hospital for cold exposure and is expected to be fine.
One of the victims described what happened before they went into the water.
“A big wind came by and my friend capsized,” JB Nguyen, kayaker, said. “As I tried to rescue him, we both ended up in the water and within 10 to 15 minutes the rescue crews showed up and saved our lives. We weren’t going to die today.”
The men were not wearing any cold water gear like a wetsuit.
Rescue crews are reminding everyone to wear the proper equipment for the weather when out on lakes and rivers this time of year.
