UTICA, N.Y. (NEWS10) — SUNY Trustees have appointed a new interim president of SUNY Polytechnic Institute.
Dr. Bahgat Sammakia will step into the role after the former president resigned over a state corruption scandal.
Dr. Sammakia has served as the Vice President for Research at SUNY Binghamton since 2010.
He also oversees state and federal government relations, research advancement and economic development.
Before taking on his position with Binghamton University, Dr. Sammakia spent 14 years with IBM and held various management positions.
This comes after former president, Alaine Kaloyeros, resigned under a corruption scandal.
He stepped down from the position a month after being charged with steering lucrative construction contracts to hand-picked companies.
Kaloyeros led many of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s upstate economic development initiatives.
Former aide and close family friend of the Cuomo’s, Joe Percoco, was also charged.
