MALTA, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Five people were arrested in connection to a fatal hit and run in Milton over the weekend. Two of them appeared in court on Wednesday.
Craig Dufore, 23, pleaded not guilty to reckless endangerment, tampering with physical evidence, and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident. Police say he was the driver of a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee that belonged to 20-year-old Christine Staufenberg when he struck 32-year-old Jacob Perring on Saratoga Avenue over the weekend.
Dufore voluntarily turned himself in with his parents on Sunday. He does not have prior criminal convictions.
Dufore and Staufenberg are accused of the Jeep in a wooded area after knowing it was going to be part of an investigation in a hit and run crash.
Staufenberg is charged with tampering with physical evidence. She faces up to four years in jail.
Both are scheduled to reappear in court next Monday.
The three others identified as Capri Fafard, 24, of Greenfield Center, N.Y.; Timothy Hinkley, 22, of Ballston Spa, N.Y.; and James Topper, 20, of Ballston Spa, were all charged with making a punishable false written statement. They are due in court on Tuesday.
