SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) – Authorities in New York say a top prison dentist defrauded taxpayers by billing the state for more than $75,000 when he was actually treating patients in his private practice.

New York state Inspector General Catherine Leahy Scott says Neil Schachter was arrested Wednesday on charges that include grand larceny.

The 61-year-old Saratoga Springs resident is the director of dentistry for the state’s juvenile corrections system, overseeing the dentists who treat the state’s incarcerated youth.

Leahy Scott’s office says that between September 2013 and early this year, Schachter claimed to be working his government job while in fact he was at his commercial dental offices in Saratoga Springs and Amsterdam.

Schachter was arraigned Wednesday and released pending his next appearance. Efforts to reach him Wednesday were unsuccessful.
