NEW YORK (WCMH)– Lady Liberty is celebrating a big birthday.

On Oct. 28, 1886, the Statue of Liberty, a gift from the people of France, was dedicated in New York Harbor by President Grover Cleveland.

The monument sits on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, and serves as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy.

The statue is influenced by Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom.

Her tablet represents the book of law, and is inscribed with the day the United States declared independence–July 4, 1776.
