RENSSELAER, N.Y. (NEWS10) — High schoolers and middle schoolers are training to become leaders, to help themselves and others in their community, combat drugs and alcohol.
The fall Youth Summit Conference to combat drug and alcohol abuse was hosted by Rensselaer High School and attended by 145 students in the area.
Education discussions are similar to those held at the county level and include a speaker who has been battling addiction, as well as break-out sessions on education, law enforcement, health and treatment options.
The idea is to give participating students the tools they need to help make good decisions and influence others to do the same.
“Why I am doing this and how I am doing this, is because I want people to know ‘hey, you have someone, we are trying to help, don’t think that there is no one here to speak for you,'” said senior of Rensselaer High School, Kthari Han.
Thursday evening at the school an open town hall meeting about the risks of underage drinking was held.
