Thousands without power in Capital Region

NISKAYUNA, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Thousands of people are without power in the Capital Region.

At its peak, over 26,000 people were without power, according to National Grid.

Balltown Road and State Street saw a blackout around 5 p.m.

“We’ve been through this before,” Niskayuna resident Tom Akins said. “It’ll get frustrating if it goes for days and weeks.”

While the power was out, people found different ways to move on with their days.

“Right now, we’re doing homework by candlelight,” Akins said. “Ordered some Chinese and takeout from a place down the street that had power.”

National Grid trucks and police cars were patrolling the areas as they worked to quickly restore power. It came back on around 8:15 p.m.

While many said it could have been worse, they’re afraid Thursday’s rain, snow and ice was an early preview of what’s to come.

“Looks like a crazy winter,” Niskayuna resident Herbert LaRock said. “Looks like we’re in for a hard one.”

Thousands remained without power late Thursday night. Some may not have their power restored until Friday.
