SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Hundreds of women came together on Tuesday for a “night out’ to benefit a local hospital.
Women’s Night Out supports the services of Bellevue Woman’s Center in Niskayuna.
After an afternoon of fun, food and shopping throughout the Proctors Arcade, the women gathered in the main theater to hear from nationally renowned heart surgeon Dr. Kathy Magliato.
She said women’s biggest misconception about heart disease is that it’s a disease of men.
“In fact, every year since 1984, more women have died from heart disease than men,” she said. “So what I really love is that tonight’s all about women. And I love that all of these women have come out for their own heart health, which is particularly important since, again, we’re dying from heart disease in droves.”
Dr. Magliato said many risk factors for heart disease are preventable, and she encouraged women to continue to educate themselves and lower their risks of having a heart attack by quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet, and exercising.
Bellevue has a dedicated preventative heart disease screening center for women.
