MOHAWK, N.Y. (NEWS10) – One Montgomery County teenager was injured and another was killed after a crash early Tuesday morning in Mohawk.
It started out as two young women grabbing a late night bite to eat, but it turned tragic very quickly.
The crash took place around 3:45 a.m. on Van Antwerp Road. Police said Kristen Barry, 18, of Fort Johnson, was driving a Honda when she lost control while negotiating a curve. She then left the roadway and struck a large rock.
Barry suffered a compound leg fracture and complained of neck and body pain. She was airlifted to Albany Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
She was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to state police.
Her passenger, 18-year-old Nakiyta Passino, of Johnstown, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Police said she was also not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Her parents stood at the corner of Van Antwerp Road trying to make sense of their daughter’s death.
“My youngest daughter called this morning and said that she had heard that there was a fatal accident,” longtime neighbor Mary Jane Trzaskos said.
Neighbors were saddened by the life taken too soon. Trzaskos said her daughter had a close call at the blind curve.
“It was winter, and she ended up in a ditch,” she recalled.
Several people walking by the scene told NEWS10 there are no signs at the curve to warn drivers to slow down.
“We don’t have any signs indicating that it’s a blind spot there, and that is something, maybe, that would be helpful,” Trzaskos said.
State police spent hours reconstructing the scene. No tickets or arrests have been issued at this time.
“It’s terrible. It’s terrible,” Trzaskos said. “When I got the call this morning from my husband, he was on his way to work and he takes that road.”
Family members of Barry and Passino are both devastated. They said they want to know what caused the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing.
