SCOTIA, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Operation Deep Freeze is the logistical support that the military provides to the National Science Foundation managed US Antarctic program.

Tuesday morning around 8:00am, 2 LC-130s and aircrew with the New York Air National Guard’s 109th Airlift Wing will takeoff for one of the coldest regions on earth. Their final destination is McMurdo Station Antarctica for the 29th season of Operation Deep Freeze.

The crews are scientists, medical supplies, and technical support.

Last year, the 109th Air Wing flew around 3900 researchers and about 4 million pounds of cargo and 1.2 million pounds of fuel to research stations across the frozen tundra known as Antarctica.
