Police still looking for fox that bit South Glens Falls boy

SOUTH GLENS FALLS, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A local mother is traumatized after her 4-year-old son was attacked by a fox on Thursday.

Thursday started as a typical day for Austin Bordeau. He was getting ready for preschool, but instead, was taken to the hospital.

“I never expected my son to walk out his front door to the car five feet ahead of us and be attacked by an animal,” his mother Victoria Burgess said. “I’m afraid to leave my house to bring him to preschool in the morning.”

A gray fox jumped up on Austin, tackled him to the ground, and bit his thigh. The father kicked the fox with his steel toe boots, but the animal kept trying to attack.

“That was the most terrifying thing I’ve ever experienced,” Burgess said. “I didn’t know what to do. I wouldn’t have known what to do if I was by myself.”

Police said fox sightings in the area of the Water Tower Village Apartments in South Glens Falls are not rare but attacks are, especially ones that come out during the day and appear aggressive.

Another man was also bitten at an apartment not far from Water Tower Village.

The Saratoga County Public Health Department was made aware of the incident. It said the following in a statement:

“Since the beginning of 2016, Saratoga County received a report for one positive rabid fox in January of this year. There are no specific pockets or areas that rabid animals are found.”

Burgess was told there is a den where the foxes live that is not far from her apartment.

“Do not leave your house without looking outside beforehand,” she warned.

Police said they have not caught the fox, yet. They are telling others to be mindful of their surroundings. An automated notification was sent out to everyone letting them know of the incident.
