Smokey Bear day held at Albany Pine Bush Preserve

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) –  Members of the public had the chance to drop in and meet Smokey the Bear and his friends on Monday .

The free event happened at the Albany Pine Bush Discovery Center.

Fire equipment was on hand for visitors to see and try out, lessons that teach kids the important role that fire plays, and that fire can be helpful to the habitat.

“We conduct controlled burns, those are fires that are conducted under very stringent conditions and we do that to mimic the effect of a naturally occurring fire fired,” Erin Kinal, Education Program Director at the Discovery Center, said.

There was also a relay race for kids and Smokey goody bags for visitors to take home.
