LATHAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Colonie Police say the fire at Travelodge Inn on Loudon Road was determined to be arson.
Police say the suspect was a guest at the motel who had checked in that night.
The suspect is currently being treated at Albany Medical Center for burns and undergoing a psychological evaluation.
The call came in at around 10:30 p.m. Saturday night.
When firefighters arrived, they were met by heavy smoke and flames rising up from room 120.
Some residents escaped the flames by scrambling up to the roof.
Everyone made it out alive, but renters like Rose O’Dell and her husband lost everything they own.
The manager of the Travelodge says he had no idea what was going on until the guest from room 120 ran naked and burned into the lobby.
After an investigation, police say they believe the fire was deliberately set by the guest who ran into the lobby for help.
“We have determined this to be an intentionally set arson fire. The person who we believe to have done it is the victim who was transported to the hospital the night of the fire,” Lt. Bob Winn said.
The suspect has not been arrested yet.
She is currently being treated for burns and smoke inhalation.
The Latham Fire Department led the operation at the scene and was aided by more than 12 other volunteer fire departments from Colonie, North Bethlehem, and Saratoga County.
