CABO ROJO, PUERTO RICO (NEWS10) – An electrifying sight as Hurricane Matthew spiraled into the Caribbean over the weekend.
Frankie Lucena captured the sprites from a vantage point 400 miles southwest of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. He says there were 28 sprite events over Hurricane Matthew Saturday night near Aruba and Colombia.
According to the National Severe Storms Laboratory (NSSL), sprites appear directly above an active thunderstorm as a large but weak flash. Sprites are mostly red and last no more than a few seconds.
