LATHAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Fire crews battled flames at the Cocca Travelodge Inn on Route 9 in Latham overnight into early Sunday morning.
People from 25 rooms were evacuated and one has been sent to the hospital.
The fire started around 10:30 p.m. Saturday night.
If you look at the damage, you can see why firefighters battled the flames into the following morning.
There was a big loss of property. People who saw it, say it was truly a scary sight.
“I don’t… I have no words,” Rose Odell, a resident of the Travelodge, said.
Odell and her husband lived there for over 20 years.
It might be a building usually reserved for temporary stays, but it had become a permanent home for the couple.
The Saturday night fire snatched it away.
“My husband woke up, he was in the kitchen and kind of did a power nap,” Odell said. “He heard a lot of hollering and sirens going off and by the time we opened the door, the flames were all up the sides going up the door. I went straight through the screen and jumped onto the roof and my husband followed me.”
While crews battled the flames all night long, the manager of the motel watched in disbelief.
“I came to the back and by that time, the fire had come outside,” He said. “The police came and the firetrucks came and at that point, they started to rescue people.”
In total, 25 rooms had to be evacuated. One person was sent to the hospital, and her condition is unknown at this time.
“I hope no one got burnt or died,” a witness said.
As for this couple, they’re left picking up the pieces and searching for answers.
“I definitely want answers because for the flames to get that big…yes…” Odell added.
There is still no word on what caused this fire, but the witnesses who saw it say they’re just happy they made it out safely.
