ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer is calling for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to hold the 2017 Men’s Basketball Tournament at the Times Union Center in Albany.
Schumer says hosting the NCAA Tournament in Albany would be a slam-dunk for the Capital Region. This comes after the NCAA announced it’s pulling the first and second rounds of the tournament from Charlotte, N.C. over the state’s controversial bathroom law. The NCAA is now looking for new locations.
Sen. Schumer called NCAA President Mark Emmert to advocate for the Capital Region.
“I pointed out that that time and time again, the region and, specifically the arena, has delivered successful events for the NCAA, and that I know that Albany could be counted on to deliver for them again in this unique circumstance,” Sen. Schumer said.
The men’s tournament was previously held at the Times Union Center in 1995 and then in 2003.
