OAKLAND (KRON) — A 2-year-old boy, who was chasing a ball into the street, has been hit and killed by an AC Transit bus in Oakland Tuesday afternoon.
It happened on the intersection of 35th and Penniman avenues around 2:30 p.m.
The boy killed has been identified by his aunt as Jeremiah Esera.
AC Transit has said bus No. 54 was involved in the collision.
The boy was pronounced dead when Oakland police officers arrived on scene.
The 2-year-old was from Oakland, but police are not saying if he lived on the street.
AC Transit is not releasing any information about the driver nor his driving record.

The Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit) wishes to extend our deepest condolences to the family of the child involved in today’s tragic event. We will continue to work closely with the Oakland Police Department (OPD) as they investigate the circumstances of this event. Any questions about the police investigation should be directed to the public information office of OPD.
The AC Transit Operator involved in today’s event has been with the District since 1999 (this will amend earlier statements listing the Operators start date as 2011). He is fully cooperating with the police investigation. District standard protocol requires that the Operator undergo drug and alcohol screening. Meanwhile, we have provided therapeutic counseling to the Operator and staff members adversely affected by this truly tragic event.
HIPPA regulations preclude AC Transit from releasing the names or conditions of individuals involved in any active investigation.
