CHICAGO, Ill. (NEWS10) — The Chicago Police Department is taking a big step in hopes to decrease the number of homicides.
After 2016 has become the deadliest year for Chicago, the police department has decided to hire over 970 officers.
The new hires will take over a two year period.
Chicago police plan to hire 516 patrol officers, 92 field training officers, 200 detectives, 112 sergeants, and 50 lieutenants.
The decision came after the city has seen over 500 homicides this year.
