Dutchmen lose to Western New England, 32-16

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — Junior quarterback Anthony Service passed for 266 yards with two touchdowns and ran for another to lead Western New England University to a 32-16 non-league football victory over host Union College at Frank Bailey Field Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Bears improved to 3-0 while the Dutchmen fell to 1-2.

Service was 21 for 27 and completed passes to 11 receivers, including Mark Dietrich, who had seven catches for 83 yrds.

Nick Connell ran for 98 yards and touchdown and Sam Olsson had 10 tackles for WNE. The Golden Bears had 445 yards in offense on 81 plays for the day.

Junior Connor Kinzelmann led Union with a career and game high 147 rushing yards on 20 carries with two touchdowns.

Brian Alebiosu made 10 tackles and Jack Reilly made nine stops with two tackles for losses.

Jake Lombardo, Tucker Newman and Hunter Ordukhanyan had eight tackles each for the Dutchmen.

Union produced 266 yards in offense. The 147 rushing yards by Kinzelmann were the most by a Dutchman since Darnel Thomas had 169 yards at Ithaca on September 6, 2014.

Neither team scored in the first quarter. Wester New England had a 17 play, 73 yards drive that ended on the Union 24 when a 4th-and-five featured an incomplete pass.

Union took over with 2:08 left in the quarter at the 24 and went seven plays and 76 yards in 3:11 for the lead.

Kinzelmann broke free for a 47 yard touchdown on a 2nd-and-nine, the second play of the second quarter coming 52 seconds in. The kick failed and it 6-0.

With 8:43 left in the quarter, Union was fourced to punt from the Dutchman-29.

The punt was blocked by Isaiah Berrios Smith and he recovered at the Union-15 yard line.

Three players later, Service hit Trent Vasey for a 10 yard touchdown pass and after the PAT was blocked, the game was tied up at 6-6.

The Dutchmen produced a long drive after the kickoff and took a 9-6 lead on a Jonathan Schaible 21 yard field goal with 1:08 left in the half.

During this 10 play, 71 yard drive that took five minutes, Kinzelmann had seven carries for 49 yards. The Dutchmen had 199 yards in offense in the first half.

Western New England got the ball to open the half and took the lead for the first time on the opening drive of the third quarter.

Service had a four yard rushing touchdown with 11:47 left to complete a nine play, 60 yard drive in 3:10 and it was 13-9.

After the kickoff, a first down Union pass was intercepted by Blair Cook at the Dutchmen-44 and returned but a clipping penalty brought it back to the Union-45.

Connell ran in from two yards out on the ninth play of a 45 yard drive in 3:25 and the Golden Bears had a 19-9 lead with 8:07 to play in the third quarter.

The Golden Bears capped the scoring in the third with a 25 yard Service pass to Vasey with 45 seconds remaining. The drive took four plays and 80 yards in 1:41.

The kick was blocked by Jake Lombardo but his return was stopped and WNE had a 2­5-9 lead.

Union started a drive with 38 seconds left to play and in 10 plays and 53 yards, Kinzelmann scored from three yards out with 11:23 remaining in the fourth quarter to make it 25-16.

That drive took 4:15. But the Golden Bears sealed it when Dante Aiken had a three yard rushing touchdown with 4:07 to play after a seven play, 66 yard drive in 2:38 made it 32-16.

Union is on the road for the next two weeks, starting September 24 as the Dutchmen open Liberty League play at Hobart at 12:00 p.m.
