ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — Following Senator Chuck Schumer’s push, the U.S. Army is granting JROTC status to Albany High School’s pre-military program.
Until now, Albany was running an unfunded version of the program, called The National Defense Cadet Corps.
They called themselves the “Henry Johnson Battalion” after the famed WWI African American solider from Albany.
Back in May, Schumer argued that it was unfair for the successful program to cap admittance to 75 students due to lack of resources.
The program is now open to federal funding and will be able to expand and provide opportunities for more students.
