Back To School: Kids get ready to hit the bus stop

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – It’s back to school time in the Capital Region. Students and teachers will be back in their classrooms as a new year gets underway.

On Tuesday Albany’s Hackett Middle School had a special visitor to get things started on the right foot.

Poor test scores have put Hacket Middle School in jeopardy in the past, but State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia said they’ve made tremendous progress and that’s why she chose to kick off the first today of school with these students.

MaryEllen Elia welcomed students on Tuesday.

“You have all done a great job, so continue your work and to every student, teacher, administrator and support staff thank you for your hard work,” said MaryEllen Elia.

Test scores from 2014 landed them on the state’s list of “persistently struggling” schools. Those institutions have one year to turn things around. And the commissioner says Hackett did an exemplary job of bouncing back, erasing themselves from that list.

“That didn’t happen by chance. It happened because there was a strong plan implemented at this school,” she said.

But, spoken like a true teacher, the commissioner says there’s always room for improvement.

“Are they done? No. They’re not done. And I would say to you across the state, schools no matter how well they’re doing, there are always students who could be doing better and teachers that could be doing better. And we’ve got to support them to do that.” Commissioner MaryEllen Elia said.

The commissioner’s visit aimed at encouraging students and staff to sustain their achievements and the programs they implemented last year. Some of those include responding to student specific needs, an extended school day and even getting the middle schoolers to start thinking about what career path they want to take.

While many districts started school on Tuesday, there are dozens of others who will hit the books Wednesday.
