Man charged with attempted murder for allegedly lighting his stepfather on fire in Schenectady

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Schenectady Police have arrested 30-year-old Andrell Leppanen for allegedly lighting his stepfather on fire.

Schenectady Police say an altercation between Leppanen and his stepfather erupted Friday morning at their home at 925 Bridge Street.

Authorities say the stepfather, who family identified as Kevin Hawkins, was doused in gasoline and then lit on fire by Leppanen.

Police say Hawkins then went to a neighbor’s home next door for help. That person who runs a daycare at that home called 911.

One neighbor says she heard screams of the horrific situation.

Neighbors who knew Hawkins say they called him Pop, are also in disbelief and are trying to understand why.

“I never heard any arguments,” Brian Hotaling said. “None of the family.”

Hawkins was flown to Westchester Medical Center with severe burns to his upper body.

NEWS10 ABC’s Lindsay Nielsen stopped by Hawkins’ store called Keys World. His family member in complete shock about what happened.


The family did not want to go on camera but are asking for prayers at this time.

Leppanen has been charged with Attempted Murder 2nd, Class B Felony, Assault in the 1st, Class B Felony, Reckless Endangerment 1st, Class D Felony, Arson 5th, Class A Misdemeanor, and Criminal Mischief,Class A Misdemeanor.

Leppanen has been arraigned and remanded to the care/custody of the Schenectady County Jail.

Schenectady Police would also like to give a special thanks to the New York State Police for their assistance in the search for Leppanen.
