FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (WNCN) — Authorities say a woman tried to drown and smother her toddler nephew while caring for him in Fayetteville on Saturday.
The incident was reported as an “unconscious juvenile” call on Saturday at a home in the 800 block of Zadock Drive in western Fayetteville, police said in an email.
“The investigation revealed that Regina Durr was caring for her nephew at a relative’s home and attempted to drown and smother the child,” Fayetteville police said.
The boy is 2 years old, police said.
According to court documents, the maternal aunt told police she wanted to kill her nephew for her family so “the struggle would end.”
When the toddler started crying, court documents say Durr laid on top of the boy, covered his nose and mouth until he became unconscious.
He regained consciousness and Durr repeated the actions until he became unconscious again, the court document said.
Durr then removed her hand when she thought the little boy was dead, the court documents say.
The child was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and has since been released in good condition, police added.
Regina Durr, 24, was charged with attempted first degree murder and felony child abuse.
Durr was in the Cumberland County Detention Center on Saturday night on a $500,000 secured bond.
