SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (NEWS10 – A trainer with Capital Region roots hopes to come out on top at the Travers Stakes on Saturday.
Mechanicville native Chad Brown is well on his way to winning his first Saratoga Training title. He currently has 30 wins, which is 10 more than Todd Pletcher, who is in second.
On Saturday, Brown will have the chance to cap it all off with a win in the Midsummer Derby.
“I’ve always wanted to have a horse good enough to win in the Travers,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to win the Travers, and now to have three horses that are good enough to make the field is exciting.”
Of the three horses, there’s the top two finishers in the Curlin Stakes: Gift Box and Connect Stabled. They will be next to Brown’s third Travers entry, My Man Sam.
“It remains to be seen if any one of the three are good enough to actually win the Travers, but just to have three horses running in the Travers and all three of them stabled right next to each other is rewarding in itself,” Brown said.
As a local guy, he knows how rewarding it would be just to win the centerpiece of the Saratoga meet. But also to once and for all shed his image as a turf trainer.
“We win a lot of big races on the turf,” he said. “We bring in a lot of prize money for our clients and stable, and that’s not gonna change. It would be nice, though, to win a class race on the dirt with a colt like the Travers to really maybe put that notion to bed that we’re just a turf outfit, which couldn’t be further from the truth.”
The 147th running of the Travers Stakes will take place on Saturday, August 27. It is a Grade 1 race for 3-year-olds with a purse of $1.25 million.
