SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (NEWS10) – At the Spa, it was Alabama day on Saturday, the lady version of the Travers.
Three-year old Songbird was the heavy 1-5 morning line favorite, considering she was a perfect nine-nine coming in to the day.
Going for Broke, and Family Tree finished six lengths behind Songbird.
No surprise, Songbird demolished the field beneath Jockey Mike Smith, and for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.
“I was just riding her, coaxing, not riding her hard but just coaxing her, keeping the same momentum, same rhythm that we had just to get to the wire,” said Smith. “I wanted to make sure we won this one for Mr. Porter.”
“I don’t ever like to say easy in racing because a lot of it and most of it isn’t,” said Hollendorfer. “So she won handily today, but she got ahold of the track real well and did her thing. So, very pleased.”
