Latham native struggles in Major League debut

LATHAM, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Two years ago, Latham native Jeff Hoffman was taken ninth overall by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 2014 MLB Draft.

The past couple years, Hoffman’s been working in the minors, hoping to one day reach the majors.

Saturday night, he got his first taste of the show, as he made his Major League debut.

The Shaker High Grad had a stiff first test, as he and the Colorado Rockies faced the best team in the bigs, the Chicago Cubs at Coors Field

Hoffman was called up just yesterday by the Rockies.

The Shaker grad looked good early on.

At the top of the second, Hoffman gets Jorge Soler looking with the slider.

Then in the third, he blows away Miguel Montero, holding the cubs scoreless.

Then, in the fourth, Chicago breaks it open. Up 1-0, Ben Zobrist, the former ValleyCat, with an RBI double to center, Kris Bryant in the fifth.

Hoffman would be tagged for seven runs on seven hits including a three-run shot to Bryant in the fifth.

Cubs win the game 9-2.
