TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Just over two years ago, Niskayuna native Garrett Whitley was taken 13th overall in the MLB draft by the Tampa Bay Rays.
He played his first year of pro ball in Florida, and the last year or so in the Hudson Valley.
But Saturday night, Whitley came home to the Capital Region.
Garrett and the Hudson Valley Renegades began a three-game set with the Tri-City ValleyCats at the Joe.
In speaking with Whitley earlier, he says he expects to see a lot of familiar faces, and is excited to take the field.
“I can’t really imagine what it’s gonna be like, just cause, it’s a tough thing to think about,” said Whitley. “Even in high school, people didn’t come out to games the way that my parents have been telling me. People are excited about these games.”
“He’s played here on the high school level, and now to come back as a professional, and just to see all the people in the crowds that are here, he’ll feel good,” said Kelley Whitley, Garrett’s mom.
