SARATOGA, N.Y. (NEWS10) — New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Matthew Driscoll has announced that a new roundabout will be opened early this fall on the southern approach of the Rexford Bridge, marking significant progress on the $32.5 million replacement of the busy two-lane bridge over the Mohawk River between the towns of Clifton Park in Saratoga County and Niskayuna in Schenectady County.
“The new roundabout will enhance safety and smooth traffic flow between two of the fastest growing towns in the Capital Region, both during construction and when the new bridge is completed,” Commissioner Driscoll said. “This is another example of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s commitment to rebuilding the Empire State’s transportation infrastructure and investing in our growing economy.”
The roundabout will open in a temporary, single-lane pattern at the intersection of Balltown Road (Route 146), Aqueduct Road and Williams Street. When the project is completed by the end of 2017, the new roundabout will be in a two-lane configuration. The bridge carries approximately 22,000 motor vehicles per day.
Work began last year on the new bridge, which is being built immediately to the west of the existing structure. The new bridge will have four lanes — two in each direction — as well as a multi-modal path. Road improvements will occur on both sides of the new bridge as well; along with the addition of the roundabout on the Niskayuna side, the road will be widened on the Rexford side of the bridge, with intersection improvements also occurring at Riverview Road in Clifton Park, approximately one-half mile north of the bridge.
Clifton Park Town Supervisor Phil Barrett said, “Clifton Park appreciates Commissioner Driscoll’s personal attention to the Rexford Bridge replacement project. DOT has been responsive and cooperative throughout the process thus far, and we appreciate their efforts to minimize any inconvenience for motorists and nearby homeowners during construction.”
Niskayuna Town Supervisor Joe Landry said, “We are very pleased that the Rexford Bridge Project is progressing, and we are looking forward to a new four-lane bridge and a roundabout. This project will improve access to our community for motorists, and will encourage alternative travel by pedestrians and bicyclists. I would like to thank Governor Cuomo and the New York State Department of Transportation for investing in Schenectady County.”
Tioga Construction Co., Inc., of Utica and AECOM USA, Inc., of New York City are the best-value contractors for this design-build project. Design-build allows for the combining of design and construction services into single contracts to help expedite work to vital infrastructure to save taxpayer money.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2017.
