Two people found dead in Rochester cemetery after being struck by lightning

ROCHESTER, NY (NEWS10) – A man and a woman are dead in Rochester and the cause was believed to be a lightning strike.

Police in Rochester said the two were found dead in a cemetery under a tree on Thursday.

Detective with the Batavia Police Department said there was a major storm with significant lightning in the area around 3am Thursday morning.

The medical examiner said they had injuries consistent with being struck.

“I haven’t seen anything like this before. In fact, the Erie County Medical Examiner’s office hadn’t seen anything like it either,” said Officer Eric Hill.

“Getting struck by lightning is like one in a million and then it happened to two people on the same day in a cemetery,” said Tim Wood, who lives in Batavia.

Police said there is no reason to believe drugs were a factor.
